HomeBack to the homepage. JourneyThe filmmakers cycled a tandem recumbent tricycle over the dusty landscapes of West Africa. Over two months they crossed five countries from Bamako, the capital of Mali, up to the legendary city of Timbuktu on the southern edge of the Sahara Desert, south through Burkina Faso, Ghana, then Togo and Benin. This is the motivation behind the journey. TrailerDownload an extended trailer for the documentary series. Director and series host, JEFF McLEAN, had extensive cycling and travelling experience but had never been to Africa. He was continuing a trip he'd started four months earlier which took him to a McLEAN clan gathering in Scotland, to England, then through Morocco, back up to Germany, then back for his second go at Turkey and Iran.

Cameraman and editor, MARTY POUWELSE, had never set foot outside Australia. He flew into the unknown with nothing but a passion for photography, a love for the outdoors and a desire for something new. He was about to get a hefty serve of each.

West Africa was a significant trip for them both providing new challenges, insights and experiences that only overseas travel can offer. The goal was to produce a documentary on the local people, but unsuprisingly, much went on behind the camera which is beyond the scope of the show, but is nonetheless inextricably linked with the making of it.

This is a series of emails which Jeff and Marty sent to family and friends during the trip about their own personal joys and challenges. They are honest accounts of the highs and lows of travelling in a completely foreign place.
